  Sonepar Lighting Challenge

Background
The Bank of America Tower was constructed in 1987 in downtown Miami. It is a prominent figure in the Miami skyline, and featured in many television shows, as well as major film productions. The building is famous for its ability to light the night skyline in many different colors, depending on the season, or the mood of the city. Whenever Miami is featured on TV or national broadcast, this building is shown. On CSI Miami, when Horatio is standing on the Heli pad at the of most episodes, it is atop this building

Opportunity
Although the building looked pleasing when illuminated in the evening hours, the owners were never really happy with the quality of the overall appearance. Some spots were lit up brightly, while others showed streaks of darkness. The owners asked their engineering team to come up with a solution, and achieve a uniform level of illumination. Luis Contreras, the appointed head of this project for Blue Capital USA (the firm that manages the property) went searching for solutions. Some people told him to add more fixtures, others said it could not be done with the space provided, and even on company tried to sell him a “blanket” of Led’s to cover the exterior. More fixtures meant more energy. And the LED idea was so far off the charts that it would not even be presented to ownership. Mr. Contreras knew there had to be a better way to get the job done without increasing their energy consumption. It was at this point the he started listening to the ideas presented by the team from World Electric Supply.

Solution
Our goal was to increase light levels while maintaining of lowering the current energy consumption. Our first step was to find a fixture and light source that could achieve the desired levels of illumination, and the meet the space, aesthetic and quality requirements. The fixtures are visible by some tenants so the design was also an important factor. Our first step was to run computer generated photometric studies and see what was required to obtain the results of desired illumination. Once a fixture was identified that could fit the need, a test installation was done on a small area. After a firm confirmation of our ideas a purchase order was issued to World-Miami to complete this project. A Win-Win-Win situation for all involved.

Designed to offer community friendly optical performance, Vision Flood reflectors focus lamp output into defined rectangular patterns while controlling direct view of the lamp, a root cause of glare and light pollution. Six available optical systems provide maximum design flexibility, to meet specific distribution requirements.
